Uganda National Women Council leadership race intensifies

Candidates Irene Adokorach and Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng have entered the race for the chairpersonship of Uganda’s National Women Council.

Irene Adokorach has called for a free and fair electoral process, urging the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat and the Electoral Commission to ensure all candidates have equal access to delegates. Adokorach emphasized the need for the council to address the challenges of rural women in underserved communities, arguing that empowerment must extend beyond urban centers to districts such as Kiryandongo, Gulu, and Mbarara.

Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng has positioned herself as a consensus-builder, vowing to unite the council and move it beyond political divisions. Her platform focuses on economic empowerment, increasing women's access to business networks, and improving representation in leadership. Aceng also highlighted the importance of skilling teenage girls and addressing gender-based violence to foster greater independence for young women.
