Uganda oil sector nears production as EACOP completes 90% of pipeline

Uganda’s oil and gas sector is transitioning from the construction phase toward commissioning and production. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which is more than 90% complete, is expected to begin transporting crude oil before the end of the year.

To manage the environmental impact of the 1,443-kilometre project, EACOP is implementing restoration plans that include erosion control, revegetation, reseeding, and the stabilization of watercourse banks. The company is also conducting tree replacement programs based on species and conservation value, and is supporting habitat restoration in the Taala Forest Reserve and the Rwizi River watershed.

In tandem with environmental efforts, the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) has convened security stakeholders to strengthen coordination. The meeting included representatives from TotalEnergies Uganda, CNOOC Uganda, the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), and the Uganda Police Force. Discussions focused on asset management, access control, and incident investigation protocols to protect growing petroleum infrastructure.
