Uganda opposition supporters released after six years in detention

Nine supporters of Uganda's National Unity Platform (NUP) were freed after nearly six years of detention without trial. The group, including activist Yasin Ssekitoleko (known as Machete) and others such as Sharif Kalanzi and Abdallah Kintu, received amnesty certificates from the Amnesty Commission after a military court referred their cases for release.

NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, welcomed the release but condemned the use of a military court and the prolonged illegal detention, noting that the Supreme Court had ordered their cases to be transferred to ordinary courts. The event revives debate over civilian trials in military courts and the broader issue of political detentions in Uganda.
