Uganda Parliament addresses staff verification and Mt Elgon evictions
Ugandan Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has addressed two distinct parliamentary matters. First, he urged Members of Parliament and staff to cease seeking personal interventions from the Speaker or himself regarding the ongoing four-day staff verification exercise. The process requires employees to present appointment letters, academic qualifications, and national IDs to ensure the authenticity of employment records. Tayebwa stated that staff with genuine documentation should have no reason for concern and warned against political interference in the administrative process.
In a separate matter, Tayebwa called on the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Susan Nakawuki, to expedite the implementation of a parliamentary directive halting Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) evictions near Mt Elgon National Park. The directive, issued by Speaker Jacob Markson Oboth, follows reports of violence, property destruction, and loss of life due to boundary disputes. Hon. Shafiga Wanyenya reported that despite the directive, four people were recently shot in Wanale Sub-county, resulting in one death and three injuries. The Ministry indicated that the Prime Minister will consult the President to guide UWA to halt operations for one month while boundary issues are resolved with the Ministry of Lands.
