Uganda Parliament approves deployment of troops to Gaza
Uganda’s Parliament voted to approve a motion authorising the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to join an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in the Gaza Strip. The motion was tabled by Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka and is linked to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 and the cease‑fire framework that ended major fighting in October 2023. The ISF is planned to comprise about 20,000 troops and be commanded by U.S. Maj. Gen. Jasper Jeffers, a proposal of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. Uganda cited its extensive peace‑keeping experience in Somalia, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and other UN missions. Opposition MP Hassan Kirumira raised diplomatic concerns, asking “On which side will our army fight?” and warned of implications for Uganda’s membership in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Morocco also pledged troops for the force. Legal details such as a Status‑of‑Forces Agreement were said to be worked out after the vote, and the deployment would occur after a phased Israeli withdrawal and Hamas disarmament.
