Uganda Police detain activist Praise Aloikin Opoloje

Ugandan human rights activist and lawyer Praise Aloikin Opoloje is in police custody following allegations regarding the misuse of digital and social media platforms. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated that Aloikin was lawfully arrested and will be produced in court to answer charges, which reportedly include broadcasting without a license via her TikTok account.

The arrest has sparked significant controversy. While police maintain the detention is lawful, activists and the Uganda Law Society (ULS) have raised concerns over her treatment. The ULS, led by President Isaac K. Ssemakadde, described her reported transfer from Namungoona Police Station to an undisclosed location as an “enforced disappearance,” a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute.

Reports from the civic platform Agora Discourse suggest Aloikin was summoned to a police station before being taken by security personnel in a vehicle. Allegations have surfaced regarding her being assaulted and threatened during transit. Aloikin, a prominent voice on corruption and women’s rights, was previously arrested during anti-corruption protests in September 2024. The ULS is pursuing legal measures both domestically and through international mechanisms to secure her release.
