Uganda Police order arrests of armed security guards moving alone

Ugandan police have issued a directive to arrest private security guards found carrying firearms while walking alone, riding motorcycles, or using bicycles. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated that armed guards must be transported safely between deployment sites and company armouries rather than moving individually.

The measure follows the recovery of 23 firearms stolen from private security organisations (PSOs) since the beginning of 2026. Authorities warned that stolen weapons pose a severe security threat, as they are frequently used in robberies and kidnappings. Rusoke cited a specific incident in Bujiri where a lone guard's firearm was stolen and allegedly used in kidnappings involving large ransom payments.

In addition to transport restrictions, police warned guards against accepting food or drinks from strangers to prevent sedation and theft. Security companies are urged to strengthen supervision and immediately report any disappearance or theft of firearms.
