Uganda Police warn officers over social media conduct

The Uganda Police Force has issued warnings to its officers regarding the use of social media for expressing grievances and posting unprofessional content.

SSP Joseph Kirabo, Commander of the Professional Standards Unit for Kampala Metropolitan Police, stated that officers must use established internal complaint structures rather than airing disputes on social media. He noted that turning to public platforms to challenge commanders breaches the police chain of command and discipline. This follows the arrest of an officer at Kasangati Police Station who posted on social media regarding a commander’s decision to release a suspect.

Additionally, Police Force spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke warned that recording and posting videos while in uniform—specifically participating in music and dance challenges—is unlawful and unprofessional. Rusoke emphasized that such conduct compromises the image of the force and suggested that officers interested in musical performances should join the Uganda Police Band instead. He also cautioned senior officers against posting content that might undermine the seriousness of their security responsibilities.
