Uganda Prime Minister orders reclamation of dormant radio frequencies

Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has directed the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to reclaim all radio frequencies that have remained inactive for more than three years. The directive aims to prevent individuals from hoarding frequencies in hopes of selling them at inflated prices, a practice that has hindered access to information in remote areas.

The decision follows concerns raised by Buhweju West MP John Bosco Kariisa, who noted that hard-to-reach districts struggle to establish radio stations due to a perceived shortage of available frequencies. Kariisa alleged that dormant licenses are being traded at high costs rather than being utilized for public service.

In response to the shortage, the UCC recently opened applications for FM frequencies in eight districts, including Gulu, Kitgum, and Hoima. Under current regulations, successful applicants must secure a broadcasting license within 60 days and begin broadcasting within 12 months to prevent future hoarding.
