Uganda proposed as site for EU migrant return center
Five European governments—Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Greece—are negotiating a plan to establish a migration return center in Uganda. The proposed facility is intended to house irregular migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected by EU member states.
Under the current proposal, the center could accommodate between 5,000 and 10,000 individuals. The initiative aims to encourage voluntary returns to migrants' countries of origin by providing an alternative to remaining in Europe. The project is envisioned as a pilot program that could begin operations by 2027.
Migration ministers from the five participating nations are scheduled to meet in Copenhagen on September 4 to discuss the progress of these negotiations. Before a final agreement is reached, technical expert teams are expected to travel to Africa to evaluate the operational conditions and management of the center. While Uganda is the primary focus, Rwanda is being considered as a potential alternative, whereas Kenya has reportedly been ruled out of discussions.
