Uganda reaffirms defense ties with Russia and peacekeeping role

Ugandan Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to maintaining longstanding defense cooperation with Russia. During a meeting with a Russian Armed Forces delegation in Kampala, Kiwanuka stated that Uganda will remain engaged with Russia despite changing global circumstances, emphasizing a desire for expanded business opportunities and military-to-military cooperation.

In a separate diplomatic engagement, Kiwanuka met with the Honorary Consul of Syria, Dr. Tamouh Moustafa, to discuss Uganda’s role in Middle East stability. The Minister emphasized Uganda’s non-aligned foreign policy, noting that the country does not take sides in conflicts, such as the situation in Gaza, but focuses strictly on peacekeeping efforts. Kiwanuka also highlighted the economic importance of Middle East stability, noting the presence of over 500 Syrian nationals contributing to the Ugandan economy.
