Uganda reverses decision to withdraw from Invictus Games

Uganda has reversed its decision to withdraw from the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, confirming that its military will participate in the international sporting event for wounded and injured service members.

The initial withdrawal was announced by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the commander of the Ugandan armed forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni. Kainerugaba had stated that the country did not wish to participate in activities that lacked the formal approval of King Charles III, citing deep respect for the monarch.

The reversal followed a telephone conversation between Kainerugaba and Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s Private Secretary. This communication clarified the monarch’s position and addressed concerns regarding the relationship between the British Royal Family and Prince Harry, the founder of the games. Following the discussion, the Ugandan Ministry of Defence officially approved the participation of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in the upcoming competition.
