Uganda seeks extradition of Chinese national from Kenya over fraud

Chen Guang, a 39-year-old Chinese national also known as Alex, is facing extradition proceedings in a Nairobi court following his arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Ugandan authorities are seeking his surrender to face 30 counts of forgery and one count of theft related to an alleged fraud at Diamond Steel Uganda Limited.

The prosecution alleges that during his time as a cashier at the Kampala-based steel firm, Chen manipulated weighbridge bills and payment vouchers. The estimated fraud amounts to approximately 4.5 billion Ugandan shillings.

Kenyan prosecutors are opposing Chen’s release on bond, arguing that he poses a significant flight risk. They noted that Chen has no established ties to Kenya and has a history of international travel, having arrived in Nairobi from Harare, Zimbabwe. The court is currently considering whether to grant the extradition request or allow Chen to remain on bond while the legal process continues.
