Uganda strengthens military ties with Russia through infrastructure and training

President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed the longstanding defense relationship between Uganda and Russia, praising Moscow for its continued military support to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

During a meeting at State House, Entebbe, with a Russian delegation led by Major General Sergei Marchuk, Museveni highlighted the historical nature of the partnership. He specifically noted Russian contributions to military infrastructure in Magamaga, Entebbe, Kalangala, and Karama. The President expressed his intention to formally thank Russian President Vladimir Putin for this support.

Major General Marchuk proposed a supplementary agreement to resume Russian-language training for officers starting December 1, 2026, involving five instructors. This initiative aims to extend existing military education programs. Additionally, Marchuk confirmed the completion of several infrastructure projects, including an arms park at Magamaga, a watercraft maintenance center in Entebbe, marine security equipment at Port Alice, and a multimedia classroom for armored vehicle crews at the Mechanised Warfare College in Karama.
