Uganda tests medical drones to improve healthcare access
Uganda is conducting medical drone tests in the Kalangala District to evaluate their ability to deliver supplies to remote island communities. The National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services Department is collecting flight data to determine the feasibility of a wider deployment.
The initiative draws on regional precedents. Rwanda reported a 67% reduction in blood-product expirations following extensive drone deliveries between 2017 and 2019. Kenya expanded its drone services in 2024 to include vaccines and blood products for remote facilities near Lake Victoria, while Malawi previously utilized drones to transport laboratory samples.
For successful implementation, Ugandan authorities must address cost structures, service prioritization, and integration with existing transport systems. Parliamentary oversight and regulatory frameworks will be necessary to ensure the technology provides measurable benefits to patient care.
