Uganda to hold 64th Independence Day celebrations virtually

Uganda will mark its 64th Independence Day anniversary through virtual celebrations held from State House, Entebbe, on October 9, 2026. The decision was announced by Minister of ICT and National Guidance Justine Kasule Lumumba following a Cabinet meeting on October 5.

Unlike previous years that featured large-scale gatherings of thousands of people, this year's event will be restricted to approximately 30 dignitaries and a limited number of religious leaders attending in person. The celebrations will proceed under the theme: ‘Embracing our sovereignty with hope and visionary leadership.’

Uganda gained independence from British colonial rule on October 9, 1962. While previous celebrations have included national parades at locations such as Kololo Ceremonial Grounds or various regional districts, this virtual format represents a significant departure from traditional large-scale public festivities.
