Ugandan soccer captain David Owori killed in Kampala robbery attack

David Owori, the 27‑year‑old captain of Ugandan Premier League club SC Villa and a regular member of the national team the Cranes, was fatally injured during a robbery near his home in the Makindye suburb of Kampala on the night of 4 August 2026. Witnesses said a group of assailants struck him repeatedly with paving stones after he resisted the theft of his mobile phone and other belongings. He was found unconscious, taken to a nearby clinic and later transferred to Case Clinic, where he died on 5 August.

Kampala Metropolitan Police opened an investigation, with spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirming efforts to identify the attackers. SC Villa, FUFA and the Ugandan parliament issued statements of mourning, describing Owori as a leader and inspiration for a generation, and observed a minute of silence. The incident has reignited public concern over rising crime in the capital, especially after the recent killing of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo.

Tributes poured in from clubs, fans and officials, and SC Villa announced it would retire Owori’s number 15 jersey. Authorities have pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
