Ugandan ex-officer extradited to US for alleged arms smuggling to Mexican cartels
Katungi Michael Mpeirwe, a former Ugandan military intelligence officer and diplomat, has been extradited to the United States. Mpeirwe was a close associate of Uganda's army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
US prosecutors allege that Mpeirwe and three other co-accused individuals—citizens of Bulgaria, Kenya, and Tanzania—conspired to supply approximately $54 million worth of weaponry to Mexican drug cartels, specifically the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG). The intended arsenal reportedly included machine guns, rocket launchers, anti-personnel mines, surface-to-air missiles, drones, and anti-aircraft guns.
Mpeirwe was arrested in Kampala on June 27. Johnson Byabashaija, the commissioner general of prisons in Uganda, confirmed the handover to US authorities. Mpeirwe is expected to face legal proceedings in the Eastern District of Virginia.
