Uganda opposition leader Kizza Besigye remains in intensive care
Uganda opposition figure Kizza Besigye, 70, who is facing treason charges, has been confined to the intensive care unit of Mulago National Hospital in Kampala after a sudden collapse on July 30. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, said he is unconscious, cannot speak or write, and his hands are too weak for him to hold a pen. He is being given intravenous fluids and, after beginning to drink soup, has shown limited signs of improvement.
A court hearing his case has postponed proceedings while it awaits a medical report to assess his fitness to stand trial. Besigye, a former doctor to President Yoweri Museveni during the 1980s conflict, has been a long‑time challenger to the president and remains a central figure in Uganda’s opposition.
