Ugandan opposition leaders Besigye and Lukwago to meet Gen. Salim Saleh

Opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, both currently held at Luzira Prison, are expected to meet Senior Presidential Advisor Gen. Salim Saleh at his Kapeeka base. The meeting is reportedly part of a government effort to resolve the ongoing treason and misprision of treason cases involving the two figures.

Besigye’s health has raised significant concern. Following a transfer to the Joint Clinical Research Centre for medical attention, his partner, Winnie Byanyima, reported that he remains very weak and struggles with basic physical functions. She has called for him to receive proper medical care outside of the current detention conditions.

In a separate development, Sheikh Kamulegeya, the father of Hajji Obed Kamulegeya—one of the individuals detained alongside Besigye on treason-related allegations—publicly praised President Yoweri Museveni during the launch of the Kampala Marriott Hotel. Despite his son's detention, the Sheikh commended Museveni’s leadership and the government's Parish Development Model poverty-reduction initiative.
