Ugandan priest's health declines in Colorado ICE detention

Edward Nalwamba, a 78-year-old Ugandan priest who has resided in Colorado for over 20 years, is experiencing deteriorating health while held in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention in Aurora. Nalwamba has been in custody since September and is currently wheelchair-bound and suffering from extreme malnourishment.

His attorney, Joy Athanasiou, reports that Nalwamba has presented persistent respiratory symptoms for months, including chest pain, coughing, dizziness, and fatigue. A medical provider reviewing the case noted these symptoms could indicate tuberculosis. Despite these ongoing issues, Athanasiou stated that medical staff at the Aurora facility, operated by The GEO Group, have provided minimal treatment, such as cough medicine, without conducting more aggressive testing or diagnostic procedures.
