Uganda's electric bike rollout fuels sustainable urban mobility

Uganda’s transport sector is increasingly turning to electric bicycles as a cleaner, cheaper alternative for commuters and small businesses. Local firm eBee Uganda, based in Kampala’s Industrial Area, offers rental schemes starting at about UGX 250,000 per month and financing options for ownership. Its e‑bikes can travel 40–80 km on a charge and reach speeds up to 30 km/h, cutting fuel expenses and maintenance costs while producing no tailpipe emissions, aligning with national climate goals.

Across other African cities—including Nairobi, Kigali and Lagos—electric motorcycles are replacing petrol‑powered bikes. Riders experience 30‑40% lower operating costs, and battery‑swapping networks built by companies such as Spiro and Ampersand minimise downtime. The shift promises economic benefits for commercial riders and contributes to improved air quality throughout the continent.
