Uganda's National Cleaning Day Engages Communities and Universities

Uganda has instituted a monthly National Cleaning Day, urging households to sweep streets and public spaces each last Saturday. The initiative aims to improve public hygiene, reduce preventable disease and foster a culture of civic responsibility, drawing on similar community‑work traditions in the region.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology joined the campaign, with staff and administrators leading a campus‑wide cleanup, emphasizing everyday cleanliness beyond the monthly event. University leaders highlighted the role of collective action in maintaining a safe, healthy environment.

Alongside the cleanup drive, the government launched the One Million Avocado Uganda project, targeting the planting of one million avocado trees to tap into global avocado demand, create rural jobs and enhance climate resilience through reforestation. Both programs reflect a broader strategy of grassroots participation to drive health, economic and environmental benefits.
