Ugl riders union seeks pay increases and safety reforms in Italy
Gianluca Mancini, the national secretary of the Ugl riders union, has highlighted significant challenges facing delivery workers in Italy, including declining earnings and physical aggression.
Mancini noted that while earnings were relatively stable until two and a half years ago, compensation has dropped significantly since then. The union has been negotiating a new contract for approximately six months, seeking economic increases of between 40% and 50% compared to previous rates. Delivery platforms have reportedly expressed willingness to address these compensation issues.
Regarding safety, new measures are being introduced to protect workers from aggression. For the first time, rider risks will be included in companies' Risk Assessment Documents (DVR). Proposed safety protocols include specialized training for delivery personnel and the potential for companies to obscure specific house numbers in high-risk areas to prevent targeted attacks.
