Ugljevik Thermal Power Plant suspends work due to coal shortage

The Ugljevik Thermal Power Plant (RiTE Ugljevik) has suspended electricity production due to a critical shortage of coal. Director Žarko Novaković reported that the Istok 1 mine is only providing 2,000 to 3,000 tons of coal daily, falling significantly short of the 8,000 tons required for continuous operation.

In addition to the fuel shortage, the facility faces severe financial and operational hurdles. The company is dealing with blocked bank accounts and a deepening financial crisis. To mitigate the impact on workers, the Government of Republika Srpska has approved a delay in tax payments to ensure employees can maintain health insurance coverage.

Operational recovery is further hindered by stalled work at the Istok 2 mine, caused by unresolved property-legal issues and a lack of machinery. While the government has promised 17 million KM for recapitalization, the full amount has not yet been received. Analysts warn that these production failures, combined with low hydropower output, will force the region to import electricity, increasing pressure on the local energy system.
