Ugljevik Thermal Power Plant to resume operations within ten days

Authorities in Republika Srpska have announced that the Ugljevik thermal power plant is expected to return to the power grid within seven to ten days. To ensure stability during the winter season, the government will provide financial support and arrange for urgent coal purchases from alternative sources to compensate for current shortages at the local mine.

To address long-term energy security, officials plan to implement a new law on strategic infrastructure to accelerate land expropriation for the Ugljevik-Istok 2 mining area. This legislation aims to bypass administrative delays caused by inheritance disputes and property rights issues. Additionally, the government intends to acquire new machinery through international agreements to facilitate coal extraction.

Regarding energy costs, Milorad Dodik stated that electricity prices for households will remain stable until March, at which point a price leveling process may occur. While residential rates are protected for now, prices for the business sector are expected to increase. The state-owned utility, Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske, will receive government support and a 50 million KM credit arrangement to manage operational costs and avoid bankruptcy.
