UGM Expedition team trains Bacan Island residents in coconut processing

The Tim Ekspedisi Patriot (TEP) 1 from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has conducted training for residents of Jojame Village on Bacan Island, North Maluku, to process coconuts into dried grated coconut. This initiative aims to increase the economic value of local coconut commodities, providing a new product suitable for bread and cake toppings that can be marketed more widely.

Approximately 20 women from the village participated in the training. In addition to producing dried coconut, the team provided guidance on packaging coconut oil to maintain product quality. While the training offers new business opportunities, residents face logistical challenges, as traveling from Labuha to the village requires a four-hour sea journey.

To address marketing hurdles, the TEP 1 UGM team is coordinating with the South Halmahera Regency's Department of Transmigration and Labor, as well as the Department of Industry and Trade, to explore sales opportunities in Labuha.
