UI GreenMetric 2026: Indian universities ranked for sustainability
The 17th edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings has been released, assessing 2,016 universities across 110 countries on sustainability performance. This edition is the largest in the history of the initiative.
In India, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) secured the highest national position, ranking 64th globally. Mangalore University followed as the second-highest Indian institution at 125th globally, while SRM Institute of Science and Technology ranked 136th.
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) achieved a significant improvement, climbing 42 places from its 2025 position to rank 334th globally. This places JMI 13th among Indian institutions and 192nd in Asia. Other notable Indian institutions in the rankings include Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (140th), National Institute of Technology Silchar (166th), and Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (192nd).
The rankings evaluate institutions based on infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education and research, and a new category for governance and digitalisation.
