UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya Rector Akhmad Muzakki resigns

Akhmad Muzakki has resigned from his position as Rector of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya, just one week after being inaugurated for a second term on September 15, 2026. The resignation follows a series of student protests held between September 16 and September 21, during which students sealed campus gates and demanded his removal due to concerns regarding university policies, transparency, and campus facilities.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar officially processed the resignation through Ministerial Decree (KMA) Number 060729/MA. KP. 07/09/2026, issued on September 23, 2026. The decree honors Muzakki's service while formalizing his departure. To prevent a leadership vacuum, the Ministry has appointed Amien Suyitno, the Director General of Islamic Education, as the Acting (Plt) Rector of UINSA until a new permanent rector is inaugurated.
