Uiseong County celebrates graduation of elderly adult literacy students

Uiseong County in South Korea held a ceremony for 14 senior students, whose average age is 79 and the oldest is 89, who completed a three‑year, 720‑hour adult literacy program. The course, begun in 2012, enables adults who never finished elementary school to earn an official elementary‑level certification, allowing them to pursue further education such as middle school.

The graduates enrolled in the first‑grade elementary curriculum in 2023 and finished the required 120 weeks of study in 2025. Mayor Choi Yuchul praised the participants, saying their perseverance exemplifies lifelong learning in the “100‑year era.” The county reports that about 300 seniors each year attend similar programs across 24 community centers.

The event highlighted the county’s commitment to expanding adult education and supporting seniors who wish to continue learning regardless of age.
