UiT proposes national competence center for Kven and Sami research

A draft proposal from UiT The Arctic University of Norway recommends the establishment of a national competence center dedicated to Norwegianization policy and injustice. The center is envisioned as an independent foundation featuring three decentralized specialized units: one for Sami, one for Kven/Norwegian Finn, and one for Forest Finn research and documentation.

Ketil Zachariassen, the lead for the investigation, noted that while significant knowledge exists regarding these cultures, existing research environments are often vulnerable and lack specific institutional responsibility. The proposal follows a 2024 decision by the Norwegian Parliament requesting an investigation into a center for research, documentation, dissemination, and reconciliation work. The draft also suggests an annual truth and reconciliation week.
