UiTM halts international undergraduate intake to prioritize Bumiputera

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has ceased the intake of international students for undergraduate degree programs. This policy shift, which has been in effect for two years, aims to prioritize higher education access for the Bumiputera community, specifically targeting the B40 income group, Orang Asli communities, and residents of Sabah and Sarawak.

UiTM Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin stated that the decision aligns with the university’s principle of maintaining low tuition fees to ensure continuous accessibility for those in need. Despite the absence of international undergraduates, the institution remains committed to improving its global standing, aiming to move from its current rank of 549 into the top 300 of the QS World University Rankings.

As part of the UiTM Strategic Plan 2030, the university also aims to generate 25 percent of its own income to reduce reliance on government allocations. This financial goal will be pursued through postgraduate programs, professional preparation, and adult education via the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (iCEPS).
