India observes Pitrupaksha rituals at sacred sites across multiple regions

Devotees across various regions in India are observing Pitrupaksha, a 16-day period dedicated to honoring ancestors through rituals such as Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shraddha.

In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, significant rituals are performed at Siddhavat on the banks of the Shipra River, a site believed to have been planted by Goddess Parvati. Similarly, in Vidisha, devotees gather at Barwale Ghat along the Betwa River to offer water, sesame seeds, and milk. In Prayagraj, rituals including the offering of rice balls are being conducted at the Sangam during Purnima Shraddha.

A unique tradition is observed at the Janardan Temple on Bhasmakoot Hill in Gaya, Bihar. At this site, individuals without descendants or those who have taken vows of renunciation perform ‘Atma Shraddha,’ a ritual where living persons perform Pind Daan for themselves to ensure spiritual peace and resolve ancestral debts.
