Ujjain Shahi Masjid security tightened after demolition clashes
Security remains high in Ujjain, India, following clashes between police and a crowd at the Shahi Masjid. The unrest occurred on September 28 during an operation to remove a portion of the mosque to accommodate a road-widening project. The confrontation involved stone pelting, prompting police to use tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd.
Following a compromise mediated by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the Shahi Masjid Committee has agreed to voluntarily remove the affected portion of the structure. The agreement involves yielding approximately 3 feet of space for the road project. District Collector Roshan Kumar Singh reported that the situation has since returned to calm, with committee members overseeing the removal process.
Authorities have deployed over 2,500 police personnel, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) members, to maintain order. Measures such as mounted marches and the installation of iron scaffolding around the mosque have been implemented to ensure stability. Nine individuals accused of involvement in the stone-pelting incidents underwent medical examinations and were reported to be in normal condition.
