Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple draws over 500,000 devotees for Sawan Monday Bhasma Aarti and royal procession

On the first Monday of the Hindu month of Sawan, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain attracted more than half a million worshippers for the Bhasma Aarti. The ritual featured the traditional ash offering, elaborate ablutions with milk, curd, ghee, honey, fruit juices and a special adornment of the deity with a dry‑fruit garland. Temple officials, including priest Pandit Mahesh Sharma, oversaw extensive arrangements for security, traffic, water and health services.

Following the Aarti, the deity in Chandramauleshwar form was placed on a silver palanquin for a city‑wide royal procession. The procession, escorted by armed police and accompanied by Vedic chants from 1,100 drummers on the Kshipra riverbank, highlighted the theme “Vedic proclamation.” District Collector Kushik supervised the event, ensuring smooth crowd management and ceremonial protocols.
