UK 50p coins attract collector interest via rare and commemorative releases
Various British 50p coins are attracting attention from collectors, including a rare 1992–1993 EU Presidency coin and a commemorative Star Trek release.
The 1992–1993 EU Presidency 50p was issued to mark the United Kingdom’s presidency of the European Community and the completion of the Single European Market. With a circulating mintage of only 109,000, it is considered one of the rarest 50p coins released into circulation. A specimen has been listed for sale on eBay in Gloucester.
Additionally, The Royal Mint is releasing a 2026 50p coin to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. Created in collaboration with Paramount, the coin features the iconic Vulcan salute and the phrase “Live Long and Prosper” on the reverse, while the obverse depicts King Charles III. The commemorative coin is available in several formats, including Brilliant Uncirculated, Silver Proof, and Gold Proof.
