UK adoptive parents convicted in murder of infant Preston Davey

Jamie Varley, 37, and John McGowan‑Fazakerley, 32, a gay couple from Blackpool, adopted one‑year‑old Preston Davey in April 2023. Within four months the child suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse, accumulating about 40 serious injuries. On 27 July 2023, at 13 months old, Preston was found unconscious and later died. A post‑mortem ruled out drowning and determined the cause of death to be acute airway obstruction caused by an object inserted into his mouth, with the injuries consistent with ongoing sexual assault.

During an eight‑week trial, Varley was convicted of murder, multiple counts of child assault, sexual offences and possession of indecent images of a child. McGowan‑Fazakerley was found guilty of child abuse and neglect.
