UK AI supercomputer project delayed by power grid constraints

The launch of the United Kingdom’s largest planned AI supercomputer in Loughton, Essex, has been delayed due to significant power supply constraints. Originally intended to come online in 2027 as a cornerstone of the UK government’s AI strategy, the project managed by Nscale may now face delays until the early to mid-2030s.

UK Power Networks has informed Nscale that the electricity grid cannot provide the required 90 MW connection within the original timeframe due to severe congestion. The facility, which is intended to host thousands of Nvidia GPUs with Microsoft as an anchor tenant, was previously noted to be located on a site that was still an operational scaffolding yard.

To address the bottleneck, Nscale is investigating alternative solutions, including the possibility of generating power on-site using technologies such as solid-oxide fuel cells. The delay highlights a broader issue within the UK energy sector, where Ofgem has warned of a logjam in electricity connection applications, with hundreds of data centres currently queuing for grid access.
