Nats IT failure causes widespread UK flight cancellations
A major technical failure at National Air Traffic Services (Nats) caused widespread disruption to UK aviation, resulting in more than 2,000 flight cancellations and affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers. The outage, which lasted several hours on a Tuesday, paralyzed air traffic across major hubs including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Glasgow.
Reports from the Financial Times suggest the glitch may have been triggered by an erroneous flight plan submitted by a British military aircraft. However, the Ministry of Defence has denied any military error was responsible, stating that the matter is subject to an ongoing Nats investigation.
Nats CEO Martin Rolfe has apologized and taken full responsibility for the incident. Internal discussions revealed that the system lacked a backup at the time of the failure, a situation attributed to ongoing system reviews and the high costs associated with data duplication.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has ordered the Civil Aviation Authority to launch an independent investigation. She stated that she does not believe the outage was unavoidable and has requested a full explanation from Nats leadership within a week. Airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air, have criticized the current state of air traffic control services.
