UK all-female chess team must add male player after top‑tier promotion

The Lionesses A Team, the United Kingdom’s only all‑female squad, earned promotion to Division One of the Four Nations Chess League (4NCL), the country’s premier chess competition. Under 4NCL rules, every Division One team must field at least one male and one female player – a regulation introduced in 1994 to boost female participation. The league now requires the Lionesses to replace one of their eight women with a male player, sparking criticism from the squad. Players Emily Maton (18) and Alisha Vyas (19) said the team earned its place on merit and that the rule undermines their purpose of increasing women’s representation. League spokesman Mike Truran noted that a recent survey of captains showed little appetite for changing the rule, despite the controversy.
