UK allocates £50m to advance quantum technology applications

The UK government has announced £50 million in funding to support quantum technology firms through a competition run by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The initiative, focused on sensing, positioning, navigation, and timing, aims to transition quantum innovations from research into real-world commercial products.

Key projects receiving support include a quantum monitoring system by MoniRail designed to detect railway track and signaling faults in areas where GPS is unavailable. In healthcare, Bristol-based Siloton is developing a handheld quantum eye scanner to provide advanced diagnostics outside of specialist hospitals. Additionally, Oxfordshire-based Coldquanta UK is working on a mobile quantum radio system to improve signal location accuracy for military intelligence and emergency responders.

This funding is part of a broader strategic effort to bolster the UK's quantum industry, following previous commitments to invest £1 billion over four years to scale quantum computing and a £670 million package to accelerate national capabilities.
