UK Ambassador highlights Turkey's global power in EU accession context

British Ambassador to Ankara, Nick Baird, stated that Turkey is the largest global power for the European Union after the United Kingdom. Speaking at a seminar on UK-Turkey cooperation, Baird noted that while Turkey's accession to the EU will be extremely difficult due to its status as a global power and resulting concerns within the bloc, it would be beneficial for both the community and Turkey.

Baird drew parallels to the United Kingdom's own history, noting that the UK faced significant challenges and rejections during its membership process 30 years ago but persevered. He emphasized that Turkey must work tirelessly and not give up on its membership struggle.

Separately, Aivo Orav, Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, announced that the EU country report on Turkey is expected to be released within a few weeks. Orav identified security, trade, and connectivity as the three pillars of EU-Turkey relations, highlighting Turkey's unique geographic position amidst regional conflicts. He also noted that the Customs Union remains a major success, with trade volume reaching 218 billion euros last year. Orav confirmed that the EU continues to monitor developments regarding the rule of law, human rights, and media freedom in Turkey as part of the Copenhagen criteria requirements.
