UK Ambassador urges Romania to provide evidence for election annulment

British Ambassador to Romania, Giles Portman, has called on Romanian authorities to provide transparency and present concrete evidence regarding the decision to annul the country's presidential elections.

Portman described the annulment as a “huge surprise for everyone,” noting that while exit polls initially suggested expected results, an incredible shift occurred shortly thereafter. He acknowledged that the investigation into a massive and unexpected TikTok campaign, associated with Călin Georgescu, was understandable, but emphasized that the government must explain the specific reasons and evidence behind the decision to the public.

Regarding potential foreign interference, the ambassador stated that evaluating the role of Moscow is a matter for Romanian intelligence services and the government. He noted that the Romanian public does not appear to hold sympathy for Russia and characterized disinformation as an “extremely complex ecosystem” fueled by both internal and external actors.
