UK Ancestry Visa offers new opportunities for Sierra Leoneans

Sierra Leoneans with eligible United Kingdom ancestry are among citizens of 22 African nations who can apply for the UK Ancestry Visa. This five-year immigration route allows qualifying Commonwealth citizens to live and work in the UK, with a potential pathway to permanent settlement through indefinite leave to remain after five years of continuous residence.

To qualify, applicants must be Commonwealth citizens aged 17 or older, prove that at least one grandparent was born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, and demonstrate financial independence. Successful applicants are permitted to engage in work, self-employment, and voluntary activities.

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs suggests the scheme could strengthen ties between Sierra Leone and its diaspora. Stakeholders believe increased mobility could boost investment in heritage tourism and cultural initiatives, such as Bunce Island and the One Nation Reggae Festival, as diaspora members act as informal cultural ambassadors. However, concerns remain regarding limited public awareness of the visa scheme.
