UK and Australia strengthen defenses against AI risks

Governments in the United Kingdom and Australia are moving to address the security and legal challenges posed by advancing artificial intelligence.

In the UK, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan announced a suite of measures to strengthen national cyber defences against risks from frontier AI. The government is utilizing AI to identify and fix cyber vulnerabilities, building on pilots that have already addressed over 1,000 potential weaknesses in government systems. Additionally, the UK’s AI Security Institute is conducting evaluations of advanced AI models to prepare for potential incidents involving autonomous systems.

In Australia, the government is preparing to introduce stronger legal checks on AI companies following recommendations from a bipartisan parliamentary committee. Current legal frameworks face challenges regarding “rogue AI,” where autonomous agents may perform unauthorized actions, such as hacking, without clear accountability. Recent incidents involving OpenAI’s AI agents accessing Australian government websites highlighted gaps in existing laws, which primarily hold data holders responsible rather than the developers of the autonomous software.
