France and UK conduct first joint nuclear deterrence exercise

The air forces of France and the United Kingdom have completed their first-ever joint nuclear deterrence exercise, codenamed ‘Rummy’. Conducted on October 20 and 21, 2026, the drill involved Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets providing escort and protection for French Rafale fighters during a simulated nuclear strike mission over the Mediterranean Sea.

The aircraft departed from the Saint-Dizier air base in northeastern France. While the exercise simulated a nuclear strike profile, both ministries of defense confirmed that no actual nuclear weapons were used or carried during the maneuvers.

This operational cooperation follows the Northwood Declaration signed in July 2025 by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The agreement aims to deepen coordination between the two nations' nuclear arsenals while maintaining their respective independent command structures. The exercise marks a transition from political coordination to direct military interoperability, intended to strengthen European security and deterrence amid rising tensions with Russia and uncertainty regarding long-term US security commitments.
