UK and Maldives agree to annual Strategic Dialogue on security and trade

The United Kingdom and the Maldives have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation following their third Strategic Dialogue held in London on 17 September 2026. The two nations committed to holding these dialogues annually to maintain momentum across security, trade, climate resilience, and education sectors.

Security discussions focused on the Indian Ocean region, specifically addressing maritime security, counterterrorism, and defense cooperation. The UK pledged to support Maldivian capacity building through technical assistance and training for police, defense forces, and maritime authorities. Governance and institutional reform, including judicial independence and human rights, were also central to the talks.

In terms of economic cooperation, the Maldives welcomed the UK’s decision to suspend tariffs on Maldivian tuna imports from 20 May 2026 until 31 December 2028. Both parties identified fisheries, tourism, renewable energy, and financial services as key areas for future investment and trade growth.
