UK faces mid‑August heatwave with temperatures up to 37 °C
The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat‑health alerts for England and Wales, covering the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber and London from 08 August 09:00 UTC until 11 August 21:00 UTC. Forecasts from the Met Office, WXCharts and Netweather predict a new heatwave to begin on 9 August, with temperatures climbing to 30‑37 °C across large parts of the country. Peaks of 32‑33 °C are expected in London and the South East, while Berkshire could see 37 °C, approaching the historic record of 38 °C set in Norfolk. Several counties – including Essex, Birmingham, Stoke‑on‑Trent and parts of Wales – are likely to meet the heat‑wave criteria of three consecutive days above the regional threshold. The heat comes after a record‑dry July, when England and Wales received only about 10 % of their usual rainfall, and follows two earlier heatwaves that caused more than 2 800 excess deaths. Thames Water has reported severe water‑abstraction difficulties, and the drought is expected to continue into September, with the Met Office warning that further hot spells are possible.
