UK and Russia face maritime tensions over ship seizures

Tensions between the United Kingdom and Russia have escalated following the seizure of the Russian tanker Smyrtos by Royal Marines near the Isle of Wight. The British government defended the operation, stating it was conducted “in full compliance with international law” to disrupt a “critical lifeline” for the Kremlin and enforce oil sanctions.

In response, Vladimir Putin has characterized such actions as “piracy and robbery,” warning that Russia may retaliate by detaining vessels from countries deemed hostile. Russian Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liinaha has asserted that Russian forces possess the capability to inspect and stop ships belonging to such nations.

Defence planners have expressed concerns regarding the UK’s ability to protect commercial shipping from potential Russian hijackings, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. While the Royal Navy has increased its monitoring of Russian military activity in UK waters and the North Atlantic by 25% this year, some officials suggest the UK may lack sufficient firepower to prevent ship seizures without closer collaboration with allies like France.
