UK and Ukraine launch defense AI partnership

A new defense AI partnership between the United Kingdom and Ukraine will provide British researchers with access to millions of images captured on the Ukrainian battlefield. This agreement highlights a shift in modern warfare, where information collected by one military can be shared across borders to inform the AI systems and battlefield decisions of another nation.

In response to these evolving needs, the United States military is focusing on data-centric security and interoperability. The Pentagon is working on its ‘War Data Platform’ modernization to enable secure cross-domain sharing. Additionally, the U.S. Army has established a common data-layer baseline for its Next Generation Command program. The FY2026 defense budget includes investments aimed at rapid mission-partner information sharing, moving away from traditional network-centric security toward models that prioritize the controlled movement of trusted data.
